A Weekend with William Kanengiser

Last weekend (10th and 11th of May) William Kanengiser was invited from Altamira Guitars to come to the Shanghai Guitar Salon.

On Saturday evening he played a brilliant concert in the Oriental Art Center of Pudong.
His program had very different pieces, which he played all with great musicality and virtuosity. I was very surprised about the amazing interpretation of some small Tarrega pieces. These showed the masters extraordinarily talent. And I enjoyed every piece on this evening. It was like a very, very good story teller tells you some very interesting story. So I was captured from this performance the whole time.

Here the program in detail:

La Danza del Molinero Manuel de Falla (arr.W.Kanengiser)

Fantasie Elegiaque, op 59 Fernando Sor

Marieta, Lagrima, Maria Francesco Tarrega

Fantasia (Sevilliana) Joaquin Turina

Break

Sonata #1 “Las Campanas” Ernesto Garcia

Two Cuban Folksong Arrangements: Afro-Cuban Lullaby, Danza Characteristica Leo Brower

Preludio Cubano: Intermezzo Tropica Rumba Manuel Ponce

The Magic Serenade Bryan Johanson

Brookland Boogie Brian Head

and 3 Encores.

And I have to mention the three encores! One of them was a very Chinese sounding piece nobody has heard before. On Sunday I asked W.Kanengiser whether he could give me the score for that beautiful piece and he told me that there is no score, because this piece only exists in his head.

On Sunday W.Kanengiser gave masterclasses in the Shanghai Guitar Salon. We started early in the morning, because there were a lot of students who want to have a class. One of my students also had a masterclass with this master and I am sure it will be a big motivation for her and for everybody who came to the Shanghai Guitar Salon and attended the masterclasses. There was a big audience with some very young guitar students, but the audience was calm and with attention listening and watching the whole, long time!

After all the students were finished, there was an opportunity for the audience to ask questions and there were a lot of questions! The people were very interested to know a lot of things like how to improve the sound of the right hand fingers and the coordination of both hands, how to relax the hands and the arms how to practice Bach…..and W.Kanengiser answered with patience.

I think such kind of activities are very important for the guitar students. It is a great motivation and also a good help for the regular guitar teachers. So I want to say Thank You to William Kanengiser and to the Altamira Guitar Company, who`s director spend a lot of money to organize events like this. They already invited many famous artists in the last few years, like Pavel Steidl, Irina Kulikova, Manuel Barrueco, the Amadeus Guitar Duo – just to name a few.

In October Altamira Guitar will invite David Russell to come to the Shanghai Guitar Salon! I am looking forward to see David Russell here!

And William Kanengiser will be in some other Chinese cities this week. Next weekend he will be in Shenzhen (on May 16th) and Chengdu (on May 17th).

If you have a chance to go to see him, please go. It is worth!

The First International Shanghai Guitar Week: a short Summary

null
Gilbert Imperial

I listened to Gilberto Imperial in the small Shanghai Concert Hall and not in the Chartres Dimanche Salon. The small Shanghai Concert Hall is a beautiful hall – like a foyer with a very high roof. But the acoustic for classical guitarmusic is not so ideal as in the Chartres Dimanche Salon. It is okay with amplifier, but even with amplifier it is difficult to hear everything if you are sitting in the back. Another thing is, that all the concerts in the small Shanghai Concert Hall has to be shorten, because they are not allowed to be longer than one hour. So Gilberto Imperial had to cancel a lot of pieces – like all of us. We (Fan Ye, Lin Huan Qi, Li Zhi Qian and me) played one day later on August 15th and it was much more funny to play in the evening in the Chartres Dimanche Salon the whole program.

The last day (16th of August) was finished with a solo concert of Lin Huan Qi. Lin Huan Qi played some real old pieces like Prelude and Allemande from S.L. Weiss and mixed it up with some jazzy children songs of Vinitsky and – the best of all – his own composition “Calling”. A very interesting concert, too!

Lin Huanqi

I have enjoyed every concert and think, it was a very successful and happy week for the classical guitar in Shanghai! I hope so much that we will find more sponsors for the second Shanghai International Guitar Week (SIGW) next year! This year the help came from the Swiss Consulate and from the owner of the Chartres Dimanche Salon.

My new Altamira Guitar

Recently I bought a Altamira Flamenco Guitar, Modell N700f. Also this guitar is not so very expensive, I am feeling very comfortable to play it – and not only for Flamenco Style!

Altamira is a Chinese brand, but now available in other countries, too.

Here a video where I use my new Altamira guitar to perform a piece from Baden Powell: Canto do Xango:

He Shun Hua and Julia Scheuffele live in the Guitar Salon

after a short time of opening, the guitar salon in the Xiangyang Road already started to become wellknown in the Shanghai guitar scene. The activities and jam sessions becomes more and more. At June the 20th the founder of the guitar salon He Shun Hua, who is one of the best guitar players in Shanghai and his German friend Julia the guitarist of Guitarshanghai made a performance in the Salon. The audience was exquisit, most of them were guitar players, too. It was a nice evening with a very interesting programm:

The first piece was a jiddish song named Tumbalalaika followed by some guitar duetts from Hans Bruederli. Then He Shun Hua welcomed the guests with a very special piece “the last Cafe” and then Julia made a Solo performance which included pieces from J.S.Bach, Roland Dyens, Dole Dyke and Giuseppe Torrisi. The last piece of the evening was a guitar duett again: the “Toccata for a wild old woman” from the German composer Peter Horton. The audience thanked with friendly applause and then after a short break the jam session started. Everybody of the audience who wants to play was allowed to play and this was a very nice idea which should be repeated as often as possible!
